Antelope Canyon

One of the most magical walks in the world is through either the Upper or Lower Antelope Canyons in Arizona…One of the most magical places I’ve ever walked through, with its never-ending curves and colors. You’ll quickly realize that Mother Nature is the greatest artist and that she has a strong preference for non-linearity.

Key Insights

  • Located in Page, Arizona, it was easy to visit Antelope Canyon as part of a road trip that may include other famous sites such as Monument Valley, Grand Canyon and Horseshoe Bend.

  • One key thing to remember is that you will need to book this tour in advance, as both sites are run by the local Native American tribes and require a tour.

  • The guides will be able to get you some nice shots with your modern smartphone but if you are into photography, you will need to use a lens of 2.8 or faster along with a camera with good ISO capability as it can be quite dark in the canyon.

Upper vs. Lower

  • Visiting the lower canyon required going down a series of stairs, accessible by walk from the parking lot, that drop you into deeper into the canyon. The upper canyon had us meeting with the tour operator at their shop in downtown Page, where you ride a big 4x4 that will drive you directly to the canyon entrance.

  • In terms of beauty, both are amazingly beautiful and you cannot go wrong with either. If I had to pick, I would give the ever-so-slight advantage to the lower canyon.
